A long bamboo pole struck the osmanthus tree, and fragrant osmanthus blossoms fell rustling to the ground with a few deep-green leaves.
A particularly beautiful cluster of osmanthus landed on the ground. Beneath the tree, a young man with dark, bare arms held a sieve. He bent down and picked it up.
The osmanthus smelled so sweet that he couldn't resist holding it beneath his nose. A few blossoms stuck to his sweaty face, which was so bright and full of youthful energy.
A coach bus swept past him in a cloud of dust. At a glance, he spotted the young man sitting by the window.
In weather this hot, he was still dressed neatly. The neck showing above his collar was slender and pale, like steamed osmanthus cake.
The coach bus jolted along the bumpy dirt road before coming to a stop. The young man by the window stepped down, carrying a suitcase. Their eyes met for a moment, seemingly without a care, yet with a coincidence too perfect to be anything but fate.
That was the first time they met.
