Legend has it that the woman in the painting, wearing silver bells, once saved the lives of the Zhao family's founding ancestors, a married couple, in an extremely perilous situation. The Zhao family's forebears had made their fortune as painters, and, grateful for her kindness, recorded her likeness and passed it down through the generations. One day, a hundred years later, a corner of this portrait in the Cavalry Shrine suddenly burned away, though the ancestral tablets showed no sign of fire. The current commander, Zhao Rongji, could make no sense of it. A few days later, a mystic envoy from the estate happened upon a street performer in Linshen whose face was indistinguishable from the woman in the portrait. She even wore the same silver bells. With Ji Mining's arrival, a series of inexplicable supernatural events followed: a mysterious young traveling physician presented an uncut jade; a gentle, free-spirited master of magic came to Linshen in person and cured the Dai family's daughter, who had been tormented by a Huogui for eighteen years; the glass cover over the portrait in the Cavalry Shrine shattered for no reason, yet the sharp shards that should have pierced Ji Mining were miraculously stopped by the ancestors' memorial tablet...
