Republican era: A Taoist priest who comes down from the mountains X a female student at the National Southwestern Associated University
Modern day: A professor of religious studies X a young celebrity
After discovering that he couldn't die, Ming Jue retreated into the mountains and slept for decades. When he woke up, the world had become unrecognizable.
In 1940, Ming Jue joined the crowds fleeing south and met Chen Qingyan for the first time. She was dressed in a close-fitting qipao made of indanthrene-dyed cloth and clutching a rattan suitcase. She was on her way to study at the National Southwestern Associated University.
By the docks at Haiphong, Qingyan treated him to a bowl of clear-broth pho for a few coins. Seeing him wolf it down, she ordered another plate of fried spring rolls.
When the ship docked, Ming Jue told the only lie of his life. He told Qingyan, "My home is in Yunnan, too. Could I go with you?"
