The day she took the young lady's place and married in her stead, the sky was clear and high.
Yue Xing saw the dashing groom on his tall horse and thought she'd secured herself a bright future. Only three months into the marriage did she learn that the groom that day was merely the biological nephew of the elderly eunuch who headed the Court of Ceremonial Supervision, and that the old eunuch was her real husband.
Yue Xing was reborn in the bridal sedan chair on her way to the wedding.
To the left lay the old eunuch's private residence. To the right stood the Jinyiwei's prison, infamous for its torture chambers.
Either way, she was going to die. She might as well risk everything.
Yue Xing bolted from the sedan chair and rushed into the Northern Commandery Office. Finding the familiar face, she dropped to her knees, clutched his leg, and burst into tears. "Uncle Jiu, I'm your niece, whom you haven't seen in years! If you save me, I'll never marry again. I'll devote myself to serving you and caring for you in your old age!"
Looking at the bundle of scarlet wedding robes clinging tightly to him, Shen Mi, now twenty-six, narrowed his eyes. "Care for me in my old age?"
Later...
Yue Xing gave up and married someone else.
Shen Mi rode eight horses to death getting back in time. Seeing Yue Xing in red wedding robes for another man once more, he gripped his bloodstained embroidered spring saber. His brows were heavy with weary menace as he asked with a faint, sardonic smile, "My dear niece, is this what you meant by devoting yourself to me?"
