The Wind Knows Summer’s Promise

The story of Xia Yi and Jiang Feng began with them as childhood friends and ended with them parting on bad terms.

That scorching summer when they were seventeen, Jiang Feng stood behind Xia Yi, holding an ice cream that was already melting.

"If you dare, don't ever come back."

Xia Yi paused, but didn't look back.

She graduated, went abroad, and started working. For ten whole years, Jiang Feng sat quietly in her contacts list, like a dead man.

Until she returned to China and ran into Jiang Feng at an important company dinner.

The unruly boy with sharp edges had learned to keep his brilliance in check, but he still shone.

Xia Yi held out her hand, her tone casual. "Old classmate, long time no see."

He smiled without saying a word, but kept handing her drink after drink until she was completely drunk.

As he helped her into the car, her eyelids drooping, she heard him ask through clenched teeth, "You actually know how to come back."

She knew he resented her.

The second time she saw Jiang Feng after returning to China, he was sitting outside her home with his clothes bundled around him. Cigarette butts littered the ground. He looked up at her, eyes rimmed with red.

"...Xia Yi, what took you so long to come back?"

#The summer breeze crossed the river, and I waited for you for so many years.
