Five years after their breakup, Xu Huanyu never expected to run into Chen Yanzhou at her most miserable.

A torrential rain was falling that day. After someone stole her project idea and she was sidelined at work, Xu Huanyu walked out of the office building carrying a box of files, looking utterly down and out.

Chen Yanzhou was handsome and refined, with a cool air about him. Holding a black umbrella, he said calmly, "So this is how you're doing after leaving me?"

Back then, Xu Huanyu had used him and cast him aside, disappearing without a word for years. Everyone thought the computer science department's star student would hate her.

Chen Yanzhou hated Xu Huanyu. Even Xu Huanyu herself believed that.

Xu Huanyu bristled and pushed away the umbrella Chen Yanzhou held out to her. "Had enough of watching me suffer?"

Chen Yanzhou had always thought Xu Huanyu was a wolf you could never tame. One day she'd be sweet and obedient, nuzzling up to you, and the next she'd bare her claws and scratch you. He gave a cold laugh and turned away.

Later, while negotiating work matters, Xu Huanyu got drunk one night. Her usual pretence of calm was gone, and she tugged lightly at Chen Yanzhou's sleeve. "Chen Yanzhou, can we get back together?"

He kept his face cold, looking like he held a serious grudge. "No."

But Xu Huanyu didn't know that during the years they'd been apart, Chen Yanzhou had barely slept or eaten, thinking of her over and over.

He'd imagined countless times that when he saw her again, he'd return every cold barb she'd dealt him over the years. But when she merely teared up, his heart softened, and he wiped away her tears. "Don't cry."

When she was little, Shi Jinli always had a thousand and one things on her mind.

But Qi Yan was always so stern, and most of the things Shi Jinli wanted to do couldn't happen right away.

Later, after the rain passed and the sky cleared, Shi Jinli rested her chin on the windowsill. "Qi Yan, I think I want to date someone."

Qi Yan's face stiffened. Through clenched teeth, he asked, "Who do you want to date?"

The girl's eyes were dark and innocent. "I don't know. My deskmate says dating is great. How about we give it a try?"

That day, the boy's ears turned red. He glared at the girl for a long time.

"Shi Jinli, you're not allowed to date this young!"

Throughout their youth, Shi Jinli went to Qi Yan whenever anything happened, and he always helped her without complaint.

The girl was mischievous and slow to catch on. It took her a long time to realize that Qi Yan was only ever kind to her.

The songs he covered and recorded on her Walkman were the boy's shy way of expressing his love.

"Some people are nice to you. Some people are only nice to you."
