The Island Falls

1.

The day Shiting saw Gu Lingze again was at their class reunion. She assumed he had married young and felt deeply dejected.

In high school, Gu Lingze had been a celebrity on campus: the school heartthrob, first in his grade year after year, arrogant and haughty, with a cool edge beneath his refined, handsome appearance. The countless girls who confessed to him were dazzling to behold. Among all those moths flying into the flame were the school's beauty, and Shiting too.

Shiting had worked up the courage back then, but before she could hand over her love letter, Gu Lingze transferred schools. After that, he vanished without a trace.

.

After the reunion, Shiting hid every flutter of her heart and climbed into the passenger seat of Gu Lingze's car.

The moonlight was gentle that night. Gu Lingze held a cigarette between his fingers, his cold, dark gaze deep and captivating. Even his profile was enough to make her heart race for a long time.

As she got out of the car, Gu Lingze asked in a calm voice, "Would you be willing to marry me?"

"?"

Shiting's mind short-circuited, and she impulsively married Gu Lingze.

2.

As soon as they got their marriage certificate, Shiting got a thorough taste of Gu Lingze's by-the-book attitude toward work, his mild cleanliness obsession, and his coldness.

She wasn't allowed to lie in bed without washing up. She had to get his permission to keep a pet. If she interrupted his work, she was met with his extremely businesslike coldness.

Maintaining this sudden marriage seemed like it might be a little difficult.

.

But later, when Shiting got soaked in the rain and came down with a fever and a cold, Gu Lingze crouched down to change her waterlogged shoes, even tying the laces into adorable bows.

The medicine was bitter, so he said, "Kiddo, I'll buy you some candy."

When he got jealous, he could no longer contain the surging possessiveness in his eyes. He would pull her into a secluded corner away from the crowd and leave hickeys on her neck.

"Remember, you're Gu Lingze's."
