Her uncle left home to travel the world, and her older sister passed away, so Lin Jiangchu took over most of the affairs at the Chu estate.
By chance, she came across a snow-white pear blossom. The next day, a tabby cat leaped into her kitchen, looking much like a young man she had once wanted to recruit. Lin Jiangchu was astonished at first, but later found that the cat was surprisingly unafraid of people. She was perfectly content to hold it by the fire in winter.
As spring turned to autumn, the tabby grew strong and healthy, with a sleek, glossy coat. Everyone praised Steward Lin for knowing how to raise a cat.
Lin Jiangchu, however, was not quite satisfied. "Cats are better a little fatter." That night, a handsome young man appeared in her dream. His eyes were round, and his bared teeth made him look both angry and aggrieved. "Lin Jiangchu! You're saying I'm not good enough, are you?!"
