Synopsis
Xue Yanrong spent most of the year away on business and rarely returned to the capital.
If his mother hadn't fallen gravely ill, he might have spent this year away from home as well.
People say that sons and daughters born into wealthy families are blessed from birth. But Xue Yanrong's life was the opposite. His father died young, while his uncles and cousins coveted what was his. Still a child, he had to shoulder the burden of being the legitimate son of the main branch. It was a difficult lot, but he had no choice.
Jiang Youqing was born into a family of scholars and was the only child in her family, cherished by everyone. Who could have guessed how unpredictable life would be? Her parents died suddenly, and she was sent to live with her maternal aunt, who was married into the Luo family in the capital.
But her relatives had long since grown distant. They were full of talk about righteousness and morality, yet rotten to the core!
Excerpt 1:
Xue Yanrong looked at the delicate woman before him, completely unable to understand.
"Why did you jump into the river?"
"Life is filthy. Death is clean."
"It's only the fourth day of the new year. They say the new year lasts until the first month is over. Just how cold is the water in the Hun River?"
"Not as cold as people's hearts."
Excerpt 2:
Xue Yanrong had just stepped out of the residence when Jiang Youqing came rushing straight toward him.
Her little face, round as a powder puff, was red from the cold. She grabbed his cloak.
"S-Second Master Rong!"
"You?"
"Yes, me!"
"You..."
"Marry me!"
Excerpt 3:
Xue Yanrong gazed coldly at the woman before him. Unlike that night, she no longer seemed delicate. There was a stubborn spark in her eyes.
"Are you clinging to me now?"
Jiang Youqing clenched her small white teeth and, for the first time in her life, cast aside all dignity.
"You saved me, so you're my benefactor. Please see it through and help me to the end."
Xue Yanrong stroked the green jade thumb ring on his thumb.
"And what if I don't want to?"
Jiang Youqing took a deep breath, steeling herself to go through with it. She walked toward Xue Yanrong one step at a time and stopped less than a finger's breadth from his ear.
"I know you're not who you say you are."
If you're not who you say you are, then who are you?
As it turned out, Xue Yanrong was a fake "young master"!

Excerpt 1
Wen Zhixu, Commandery Princess of Dingyang, looked at the person on horseback and felt her heart go astray. She hadn't managed to hold on to him in her previous life, but this time, she wouldn't let him go for anything.
"What kind of girl do you like? Sweet and clingy, or elegant and refined? I can be alluring and irresistible too."
"Your Highness, please behave with propriety."
Instead of behaving with propriety, Wen Zhixu moved closer and closer.
"Chen Ningqi, are you still pretending?"
Excerpt 2
After Chen Qi was ambushed and seriously injured, she woke to find the Commandery Princess of Dingyang as the only person by her side.
The young girl blinked her bright, sparkling eyes. Her long, thick lashes fluttered, and her peachy cheeks blushed an unusual shade of red.
"My lord, you held me while we slept last night."
"..."
"You have to take responsibility."
Chen Qi lowered her head and looked at herself, completely naked. Surely anyone who wasn't blind could tell she was a woman?
Excerpt 3
After Wen Zhixu discovered that Chen Qi was a woman, Chen Qi thought she would finally give up. Instead, she became even more persistent.
"Think about it. Now that I know your identity, the safest thing for you is to keep me in your residence so I can't tell anyone. So... why not... marry me?"
"Are you sure?"
Chen Qi licked her lips and backed her into a corner.
"What are you doing? I'm a commandery princess!"
"You want to marry me, don't you, Your Highness? Why not consummate the marriage first?"
