Marrying an Engineering Man in the 1970s

Song Yan transmigrated into a book and became the real daughter who had been switched at birth in a period novel. At seventeen, she was finally brought back to the city by her biological father, the deputy director of a state-owned machinery factory.

Her biological parents doted on the fake daughter. To get their adopted daughter a recommendation for a worker-peasant-soldier university, they married Song Yan off to the son of a county official, who had a hidden illness. After the wedding, he constantly suspected her of being unfaithful, and eventually beat her to death.

“Of the thirty-six stratagems, the best is to run.” Song Yan wanted to escape, but everyone in the family compound was watching her. She couldn’t get away even by digging a tunnel. Even the workshop team leader who had shown interest in her ran off without a trace as soon as he saw her from behind.

In the end, she could only pin her hopes on Fu Yan, a senior engineer sent from the provincial capital to provide guidance.

Song Yan: Engineer Fu, could you open my lunch tin for me? I’m not strong enough.

Fu Yan: The cafeteria cook can open it.

Song Yan: ...

Song Yan: Engineer Fu, it’s so dark outside. I’m scared. Could you walk me home?

Fu Yan: I’m working overtime tonight. Go back with the other women up ahead.

Song Yan: ...

Song Yan: Engineer Fu, I think there are a few ways to improve the machine tool you’re upgrading in Workshop One.

Fu Yan: Where?

Song Yan: %￥#&@, these are the places.

Fu Yan: Are you free tonight?

Song Yan: ...What?

Fu Yan: Let’s have dinner together.
