Plucking a Jade Branch

After her family falls into decline, Gu Roulan is sold to the Zhu family as a maid.

The Zhu household is luxurious and imposing, yet unfathomably deep, a place more terrifying than the halls of government.

Rumor has it that the Second Master of the Zhu family is a refined, handsome gentleman, as graceful as an orchid and a jade tree, a celestial being descended to earth. His power spans the eight prefectures of Yongzhou, and he virtually monopolizes Jiangnan. The common people both fear and admire him, scarcely daring to say a word about him.

The Third Young Master of the Zhu family, a notorious womanizer, is the scourge all the maids in the manor try to avoid.

Roulan is beautiful and knows she may not be able to protect herself, so she is cautious in everything she does. But no matter how careful she is, after spending some time in the Zhu household, she still catches the eye of the Third Young Master.

That day, the sky was dim, and wind and rain swept down with flashes of lightning.

Breathing unsteadily, she stumbled out of the Third Young Master's room and fell right at the feet of the Second Master of the Zhu family.

The Second Master stopped in his tracks.

With nowhere else to turn, Roulan pleaded with him in despair: "Please, Second Master, save me..."

He looked down at her for a moment.

His voice carried the faintest hint of a smile. "If I save you, how will you repay me?"

Everyone outside the Zhu household says the Second Master looks like a celestial being, a noble young gentleman.

Only after entering his room does Roulan learn that everything was part of his plan. From the moment she set foot in the Zhu household, she had already fallen into the web he had carefully spun, with no hope of escape.
