As one of the country's youngest recipients of the Outstanding Young Scientist award, Xu Lan has dreams.
She wants to become the youngest academician, too, and devote herself to researching high-yield rapeseed.
Xu Lan works hard, writing reports, visiting field sites, running experiments, and publishing SCI papers. She handles everything herself.
Until the director brings in an intern.
Jiang Ping is useless at everything. His academic work is a mess, his papers are all over the place, and he handles tasks in a sloppy, drawn-out way. His hobbies are street racing and picking fights.
Xu Lan can't stand him.
She thinks young people these days have no dreams or ambitions. They're either angsty teenagers pretending to be gloomy, or they're chasing speed and thrills on the road.
Later, she discovers that the intern comes from a very poor family.
Xu Lan decides to help him, get him to break his bad habits, and find a dream of his own.
The way the intern looks at her grows more and more peculiar. Later, he corners her outside her home.
"You really don't like me?"
"If you don't want me, who'll drive the tractor and plow the fields for you when you go to the research station?"
"Who'll take you to town on an electric tricycle to haul water?"
The Jiang family is rich and influential, and has no shortage of heirs.
Jiang Ping's parents don't expect their son to become a business tycoon. They just hope he'll get a job at a government institution, with benefits and a pension, and won't work himself to death.
But Jiang Ping neglects his studies and focuses on racing, collecting trophy after trophy and fangirl after fangirl.
That is, until his parents beg and plead to get him an internship at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
His boss, Teacher Xu, has no sense of fun. She looks down on his profession, can't appreciate his good looks, and keeps threatening to send him off for a heart-to-heart with the police.
Later, he discovers that Teacher Xu has dreams and ambitions. When she stands in the fields in a straw hat, harvesting rapeseed, she seems to shine all over.
So he keeps pestering her, pretending to be poor and playing for sympathy.
In the end, when Jiang Ping wins the Formula One championship, a reporter asks which driving experience he remembers most vividly.
Jiang Ping smiles. "Driving a tractor and an electric tricycle in the countryside."
A genius at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences x a dramatic rich second-generation heir
