My Husband Used to Be a Bandit

Because she refused to use the little nest egg her mother left her to support the younger brother born to her stepmother, Xie Yanyan, the third daughter of the Marquis of Changxin's household, was bullied by her family for years. They even switched her marriage arrangement, giving it to her stepmother's daughter.

Her younger sister, Xie Yingying, became the betrothed of the Minister of Revenue's son, a top-scoring palace graduate, while Xie Yanyan was promised to Zhou Shaohuai, an illegitimate son of the Marquis of Xiande's household, who had only just been brought back from Jiangdong.

He was the bandit chief who had terrorized Jiangdong for six whole years, a vicious, murderous man who had only just been recruited into the imperial army and given the rank of fourth-grade assistant general.

Her grandmother made it clear: if Xie Yanyan was willing to swallow her pride and pay up, the elders could find a way to break off the engagement.

Without hesitation, Xie Yanyan picked up the ledger box for her little nest egg and went straight to Zhou Shaohuai's residence. “I hear the young general has a blade, soldiers, and courage. I have money. Let’s make do together.”

Zhou Shaohuai had just come from the training grounds. Sweat covered his brow, his outer robe hung open, and his body was lean and powerfully muscled. His gaze was cold as a blade, and a faint half-inch scar over his left brow added a fearsome edge to a face that would otherwise have been exceptionally handsome.

“Didn’t you come to break off the engagement?” Zhou Shaohuai asked in surprise, his eyes sweeping over the lovely young girl before him, her skin white as snow. “I used to be a bandit.”

For some reason, Xie Yanyan blushed, her heart pounding. “You won’t be one anymore. And even if you are, don’t forget to take me with you.”
