A Couple in the 1980s Courtyard

After the national college entrance exams are reinstated, Ye Jiao'er follows her educated-youth husband back to the city after he gets into a university in the capital.

On her very first day in the city, her sisters-in-law and a whole host of relatives from her husband's family look down on her.

Elder sister-in-law: My family is from the city, and you're from the countryside. We're not a suitable match. Get out.

Younger sister-in-law: You're so uncouth. Having a sister-in-law like you is embarrassing. Don't you dare say you know me when we're out.

Mother-in-law: I don't accept her as my daughter-in-law!

Ye Jiao'er is the brigade captain's daughter. She was spoiled her whole life and won't put up with being pushed around.

When her elder sister-in-law says she doesn't belong in the city and tells her to leave, she walks right out. The next day, she buys the courtyard house next door and gets herself a city household registration.

A week later, Ye Jiao'er sets up a braised-meat stall outside her courtyard. The delicious smell makes all the kids in the neighboring courtyards howl with hunger.

A month later, Ye Jiao'er has bought a three-story building and become a big business owner. She has more property deeds than her elder sister-in-law, dresses more stylishly than her younger sister-in-law, and says nothing when she sees her mother-in-law, simply turning around and walking away.

Six months later, the relatives on her husband's side decide that, although Ye Jiao'er is from the countryside, she's actually quite capable. One after another, they humble themselves and come to her door to claim her as family.

Ye Jiao'er rejects them three times over: I'm uncouth. I'm from the countryside. I'm not good enough!

P.S.

1. Everyday family life, with a focus on food and raising children. A slow burn.

2. The heroine is a local, with no golden finger. Everything she can do was taught to her by her transmigrated grandmother.
