Gu Weiyi had always looked down on Princess Chun'an. Because of her royal status, he pretended to accept the emperor and empress's arranged marriage, while secretly carrying on with Ziyin.
When Chun'an learned the truth, resentment filled her heart. She sought the Empress Dowager's permission to go to the Gu residence, hoping to win back the heart of the young man she loved. But after meeting Ziyin and hesitating for a long while, she ultimately refused to fight over him.
Just as she was finally severing her attachment after many twists and turns, she met Chanyu Suye, her destined partner and true love. She was lively and carefree, and had spent her childhood following her aunt through mountains and forests and across the waves. He was shrewd and decisive, with a love of adventure, and often ventured alone behind enemy lines.
One glance, and love was born. Bound by shared ideals, they faced life and death together. Princess Chun'an married into the Hu lands of Mobei.
When Chun'an entered Mobei, Gu Weiyi stood atop the city gate, watching the wedding procession from afar until it dwindled to a dot and vanished. He finally understood his own heart. Ziyin was his wife, but not the woman he loved. Having lost the one in his heart, he felt an emptiness within, and the trials of the rest of his life began.
After Chun'an left, he found a substitute who looked like the princess. Ziyin looked at him with scorn. "Since you have no feelings for me, I'll leave you be. From now on, we go our separate ways, and may each find our own happiness."
When the princess returned to the country, he thought Heaven had taken pity on him and given him another chance.
She was nearly sixty now, no longer a girl in the bloom of youth. The lively gleam in her eyes, like spring water, had faded, replaced by the calm depths of a still pool.
After weathering countless storms, she looked at him again with not a trace of love in her eyes. He had long since ceased to exist in her heart.
Gu Weiyi was unwilling to accept it, yet powerless to change anything! He secretly swore to win her back. But he never fulfilled that vow, not in his entire life.
Chun'an ascended the throne, and Ziyin became a general. The whole country was in an uproar: former rivals in love now fought side by side, one ruling the realm at court, the other defeating the enemy on the battlefield.
The empress died.
General Ziyin, dressed in armor, gave Gu Weiyi one cold glance. He stood in mourning white, his eyes bloodshot with resentment. Without a word, she turned and walked away, sword in hand.
The new emperor ascended the throne, the realm was unified, and General Ziyin retired to the mountains.
A little scene:
Chun'an: "My dear Tanhua, how did that little head of yours get so brilliant? You're so impressive, I'm truly no match for you!"
Chun'an: "Tanhua, why aren't you taking the women's official examination?"
Tanhua smiled gently. "Because of you!"
The princess's cheeks flushed, and her heart was struck all at once.
