A Happy Match

The Duke of Tang and the Great General Who Guards the Nation were at odds, often arguing bitterly in court. Who would have thought an imperial edict arranging a marriage would turn enemies into in-laws? The Duke's wife couldn't bear to see her own daughter married into the general's household to suffer, so she pushed Xu Mushuang, the daughter of the first wife, into her place. Her sisters in the household congratulated her and voiced their admiration, but secretly rejoiced at her misfortune. Xu Mushuang didn't care. She shut herself away and diligently embroidered her wedding dress. Many people privately thought this was no happy match, but neither of the two involved felt that way.
