On a day of torrential rain during the first semester of her freshman year, Wen Xi met her new roommate in front of the academic building.

The girl wore a black tracksuit and a baseball cap. Tall and fair-skinned, she walked through the howling wind and rain like a resilient, upright ink bamboo.

After getting to know her, Wen Xi found that her new roommate was wonderful: clean and tidy, pretty, and a sanda athlete who had won plenty of awards.

She was also extremely withdrawn and rather eccentric, spending most of her time alone and disliking socializing.

But Wen Xi liked her and wanted to be friends.

Later, Wen Xi got her wish. She and Fang Jiahe became not only friends, but lovers, too.

But life is unpredictable. Less than half a year after they made their relationship official, Fang Jiahe suddenly dropped out of school and vanished without a trace, cutting off contact with everyone, including Wen Xi.

Wen Xi had thought she and Fang Jiahe might never meet again, and that she would never find out why Fang Jiahe had left.

But four years later, on another cold, rainy day, she unexpectedly ran into Fang Jiahe after all that time apart.

They had both changed, but one thing remained the same: they still loved each other.

Huo Mian grew up deep in the mountains, with no family or friends. The only person she had was her master, who taught her literature and martial arts, treated her like her own child, and cared for her in every way.

But that spring, her master suddenly calculated her fate and declared that her days were numbered, and that she would soon depart this world. Huo Mian took no heed, thinking her master was joking, and gave it no further thought.

Yet the next morning, she awoke to find her master's breath gone and face ashen. Her master had truly died just like that, leaving her behind.

Caught completely off guard, Huo Mian found herself all alone. With no one else to turn to, she took up her sword and descended the mountain into the mortal world.

But the jianghu was vast, and the road ahead uncertain. Huo Mian had no family to turn to and nowhere to call home. The carefree travels she had once dreamed of were nothing like she had imagined.

Figuring out how to earn money, fill her stomach, and stay alive became a major challenge.

Luckily, someone told her, "The Xuanfeng Tower is the greatest assassin organization under heaven. You're so skilled. Why not offer your services and ask them for a job? You can uphold justice and root out evil while earning money to support yourself. Isn't that the best of both worlds?"

Huo Mian thought it over. "That makes sense. I should give it a try!"

So, a few days later, Huo Mian paid a visit to Xuanfeng Tower and landed the first paying job of her life.

Only it wasn't a job to kill someone. She was to "escort" a person.

That person had bright eyes and pearly teeth, and was graceful in every glance. Though confined in a tiny prison cart, she seemed to sit amid the cool moonlight. When she lifted her eyes to look at Huo Mian, they held a smile and endless allure.

"My name is Mu Ci. What is yours, miss?"
