With fiery red curls, a taupe belted trench coat, black patent-leather pointed heels, and oversized sunglasses covering half her face, she smoked a cigarette for women on the docks near the harbor. She looked like a glamorous woman straight out of a movie screen from the early twentieth century.
Beautiful, stunning, and flashy, yet surrounded by a cool aura that kept people at a distance, she was a striking sight at the chaotic and crowded Port Eight.
But Ming Xu hadn't noticed her because of her looks. It was the eyes hidden behind those sunglasses. They always seemed to be watching her, deliberately or otherwise.
Three days later, the woman cornered Ming Xu in the ship's cabin.
“Are you the poor soul Winnie Sa has blacklisted across the industry?”
“Who are you?”
“Temp dockworkers don't make much unloading cargo. Why not work for me instead? Room and board are covered, and you can name your price.”
Ming Xu eyed her warily, her voice cool. “What do you want me to do?”
The woman took off her sunglasses and smiled faintly. “Hire you as my private detective, of course. Isn't that what you used to do?”
“Even if the whole world abandons you, you'll still have me, and I'll still have you.”
