Fu Ling transmigrates into a period novel as a rich young woman who has fallen on hard times and been sent to the countryside. Unable to adjust to the poverty and grueling farmwork, she dies of illness after just three months.
After her death, a female educated youth claiming to be her older sister shows up.
She inherits all of Fu Ling’s late parents’ property,
then uses Fu Ling’s name to write to her fiance, who is training in the military, and soon marries him herself.
She enjoys decades of smooth sailing on the inheritance, without even burning a single stick of incense for Fu Ling.
After Fu Ling wakes up, the first thing she does is make a will, leaving all her property to the government if anything happens to her.
Then she writes to her fiance to break off their engagement and demands the return of the antique jade worth a million.
Finally, she packs her things and heads straight to the desperately poor family at the end of the village.
Looking at the scowling man there, she says, “Dad, I’m sorry I’m late.”
The scowling man: “You’ve got the wrong person!”
Fu Ling: “I can’t be wrong. Your ex-wife remarried and became my stepmother. By extension, that makes you my stepfather, so calling you Dad is only right.”
The scowling man tries to throw her out,
but his blind, elderly mother totters out of the house. “Is that my precious granddaughter? Let Grandma have a look at you.”
Fu Ling hurries over and calls out, “Grandma, I’m your real granddaughter!”
The whole village is in an uproar.
So Xu Jianguo has a daughter from his ex-wife’s side.
Xu Jianguo dotes on this daughter. Word is he won’t let her lift a finger to wash clothes, cook, or clean, and won’t even let her go to the fields to earn work points.
He’s even announced that he’ll find her a strong, caring husband.
Chen Lang is the first to volunteer when he hears the news. He even stresses, “We grew up together, so you have to favor me!”
Favor you? As if. He isn’t even her real dad!
Fu Ling nods with satisfaction. “All right, him it is.”
On the day she gets married, Xu Jianguo watches them walk away and silently weeps: At last, I’ve sent this menace out the door!
P.S.:
1. Fu Ling and Chen Lang are the couple.
2. Xu Jianguo is ten years older than the heroine, and Chen Lang is eight years older. That probably doesn’t count as an old man preying on a young girl.
3. A cozy slice-of-life farming story.
