He Mistook the Person He Owed a Favor To

[Third-person narration] He mistook the person he owed a debt of gratitude to. But by then, he had already worked like an ox and a horse for me, and pledged himself to me in return. * On the forty-ninth day after I died, someone dug me out of my grave. The person who dug me out had a stunning, otherworldly beauty. He didn't look like someone from the mortal realm. I thought the messengers of death had finally come for my soul. I raised my head and complained, "What took you so long? I had to lie in that wet, slimy mud for ages. Do you messengers of death slack off, too?" The other man froze, then chuckled. "I am Fu Chenying. I'm not here to take your soul. I'm here to repay a debt of gratitude." Fu Chenying brought me back to life, cut off pieces of his flesh and gave his blood to make medicine for my recovery, brought me into the sect, and helped me rise to a position of power. Whatever I asked of him, he never refused. Even when I coveted his good looks and asked him to give himself to me, he merely gazed at me and thought for a moment before generously taking off his clothes. Confused, I asked, "Did I really do so much for you that you need to go this far?" Fu Chenying replied solemnly, "A debt of gratitude is not measured by its size. Even a drop of water should be repaid with a spring." Day after day, I fell deeper into his utterly selfless "repayment," until I was hopelessly in love with him. In the end, what I got was him pulling out my bones with his own hands, along with an apologetic whisper: "I'm sorry. I mistook you for someone else..." * Fu Chenying thought that once he had repaid his debt, he could sever all ties to the mortal world and bring their karmic connection to an end. He never imagined that one wrong step would lead to another. He lost both heart and soul, sinking deep into the mire, while she had already walked away, affectionately linking arms with someone else. * One-on-one romance, happy ending. Gentle heroine x workhorse hero. A melodramatic writing exercise, with a forced-possession storyline. The heroine begins as a frail, sickly mortal before embarking on the path of cultivation. * The cover has been licensed. Theme: A drop of water should be repaid with a spring.
