General X Princess
Princess Xining, the youngest legitimate daughter of Emperor Zhuangwu, had a birth mother who was the empress and the apple of the emperor's eye, and an elder legitimate brother, the crown prince, renowned for his virtue. She was the most exalted person in all of Dashun, beyond compare.
Later, the deposed crown prince conspired with General Jian'an, who commanded the army, to murder the emperor and seize the throne. Xining's birth mother was placed under house arrest, and her brother vanished without a trace. In an instant, Princess Xining lost her power and became a plaything in General Jian'an's tent, summoned and discarded at his whim.
Later still, the missing crown prince returned and reclaimed the throne. Princess Xining became the Grand Princess Xining, while General Jian'an, once the most powerful man around, became a prisoner.
But though the internal turmoil had ended, the border troubles continued. The court had no one capable of dealing with them, and the new emperor's hair turned white with worry overnight.
In the damp, dark prison, the Grand Princess, dressed in finery, slowly approached the man who had personally destroyed her pride.
"Our borders remain in danger, and the whole country is in anguish. My imperial brother remembers the general's contributions in putting down the rebellion, so he sent me to ask: Are your swords sharp? Are your warhorses ready?"
"Xining, all the world's hustle and bustle is for profit."
"General, all the world's comings and goings are for profit. As long as you secure our borders, the princess will still be yours in the tent."

General Jian'an had never believed the old saying that a beauty's bed was a hero's grave.
He had his sights set on the throne. His calculations in prison were nothing more than a strategy to defeat his enemies in one move.
But when Xining came slowly toward him out of the shadows, he felt that he was no more than an ordinary mortal.
