Wishing You Happiness

[Not fully revised yet. Not recommended for reading.] One midsummer when she was thirteen, cicadas brought the quiet and taciturn Xu Wuhuan into Yu Yue's world. One by one, the friends around her left, teaching her what it meant for a relationship to belong to a certain stage of life. Only Xu Wuhuan stayed by her side from beginning to end, from the time they were thirteen until they were twenty-eight, from classmates and friends to lovers and then wives. They made a wish upon a shooting star, promising to stay together forever. But three years into their marriage, their relationship was on thin ice. "Don't you have a life of your own?" "You really don't have the talent for this. You should give up sooner rather than later." That day Xu Wuhuan said so many cruel things, things that had once made her anxious and kept her tossing and turning at night. It turned out Xu Wuhuan was her final lesson in parting. The day she and Xu Wuhuan separated, snow fell over Miancheng for three days and three nights. The roads were blocked, and she dragged her luggage a long way. Her suitcase left a long trail of tracks in the snow. Gathering the last of her strength, she returned to her hometown. She decided to give up Xu Wuhuan, who had occupied most of her life, and live on her own. "Then I wish you happiness." Those were their final words to each other. [I wish you freedom and happiness. May you always love yourself most.] Theme: Don't look back. The road ahead will always be bright.
