Back then, the world was warm and damp, and the river ran clear. Until everything changed. The Savior decided to save the world. The Foundation decided to contain all of humanity. /// "I've been infected." Fujimaru Ritsuka wanted to laugh, but couldn't. "It's ridiculous that you sacrificed your life to save a monster." "You've lost your will to live. That's not good. You've already given up." "You can't give up until the very end," Roman said quietly. Yes, it sounds like a pep talk from an optimist, clinging on desperately, crawling and rolling through the dirt just to last until the end. The station chief lowered his head and swirled the coffee in his cup. "Do you know what we've been fighting all this time?" "Anomalies?" "No. The unknown. Anomalies? Those aren't scary... Even a monster that could destroy the world with a yawn isn't scary, because humanity can fight back. Even if it wiped us all out with a single finger, we could spit at it and flip it off before we died... That's something known, something rational, something not to be afraid of." "The Foundation's greatest challenge is always the next unpredictable future. We don't know what we'll face. In that situation, when you're killed, you won't even be able to spit at it... Humanity is too weak in the face of the unknown. Our minds frighten us, our hearts numb themselves, our reason falls into chaos. We'll expose the ugliest parts of human nature and turn our blades on the weak... For thousands of years, humanity blamed its own kind for anomalies and hated each other. Europeans once held witch trials, burning young girls at the stake while everyone else danced and celebrated, believing they had driven away the demons of disease. Flowers and fine wine were laid beneath the charred skeletons... Did they win? Quite the opposite. Ignorance triumphed, and humanity was utterly defeated." Its side doors slowly swung outward, their silver metal reflecting sharp glints in the sunlight, like the broad, majestic wings of a silver dragon. "I love this technologically advanced present. Learning about today's technology, and imagining what the scientists of the past were thinking. Everything around us is a product of technology, a banner of humanity's victory over ignorance through reason. What a beautiful world this is, where imagination can run free and flourish..."
