In the Name of Tenderness

Also known as The Big Bad Wolf and the Little White Rabbit [1] The Shi and Fu families were old family friends, and had long ago arranged a betrothal between their children. Unfortunately, both families only had boys. Now that the grandchildren were nearly grown, there was still no marriage alliance to speak of. Old Master Fu was worried that the two families would never be joined by marriage. Until... Shi Wanqing was born. She was the only girl in either family, precious beyond measure. If she wanted the moon, they wouldn't even pluck a star for her, but would simply lift her up to the heavens. When Shi Wanqing turned eighteen, everyone assumed that the little princess of the Shi family would be engaged to the third young master of the Fu family, who was around her age. Even Third Young Master Fu thought so. But then he suddenly realized he loved someone else. To avoid getting engaged to Shi Wanqing, he humiliated her in front of everyone. At that time, the Shi family had just suffered a calamity, leaving Shi Wanqing all alone. Not long before, the Shi family had entrusted her to them, asking them to treat her well. [2] Fu Mingzhu, the fifth master of the Fu family. He was always composed and reserved, his madness hidden behind gold-rimmed glasses. But when he saw the girl he'd watched grow up being rejected, he finally let himself act on a whim. To everyone's astonishment, he said, "Your uncle isn't married yet. Your engagement can wait." But he had never said he liked Shi Wanqing. In fact, everyone knew he had a white moonlight in his heart. He had only said it out of pity for Shi Wanqing. The girl was proud, too. Though her eyes were red with hurt, she remained stubborn, apologized gracefully to Old Master Fu, and asked to dissolve the century-old betrothal their families had arranged but could never fulfill. The spoiled little girl of the past grew up in an instant, then left the country without looking back. She had no idea that after she left, the man who wanted to marry her truly went mad.
