No Smoking

Gu Yansheng met Liang Ji for the first time entirely by chance.

The office had lost power, and his laptop had just broken. It would take two days to repair, but he still hadn't finished revising the lecture slides he needed that evening.

So he went to the internet cafe closest to the university, Soulfire.

There were a lot of people eating in the cafe, and the faint smell of smoke hung in the air, so Gu Yansheng decided to have a cigarette too.

He had just lit it and taken a drag when someone tapped twice on the table beside him.

He looked up. Liang Ji, wearing an oversized black T-shirt and looking like a rough character, said to Gu Yansheng, "Sir, smoking is against the rules at our cafe. You'll have to pay a fine."

Only then did Gu Yansheng notice that nobody else was smoking. He stubbed out his cigarette, took out his phone, and asked, "How much?"

"Five yuan."

Gu Yansheng opened the payment app. As it beeped, he was about to enter the amount when he noticed an option to add someone to his contacts.

He looked at Liang Ji, who smiled. "Sorry, I got that wrong. Just transfer it to me."

Gu Yansheng was known at Nan University for being stern and wooden, but he was so good-looking that quite a few people attended his classes.

Later, someone asked Liang Ji what he liked about Gu Yansheng. Liang Ji was known for being freewheeling, so it was hard to imagine him with Gu Yansheng...

Liang Ji flicked the ash from his cigarette, a meaning-laden smile at the corner of his mouth. He replied with a question: "Don't you think it's especially alluring when someone who looks so serious and restrained cries and begs?"
