Urban Legends That Aren't Quite Urban

[This is actually a collection of short stories. Check the section headings for each story's title. The stories are independent, even though they feature the same group of people.]

The Jiang clan, also known as the Xuan clan, is an ancient and mysterious family responsible for overseeing sacrificial rites. These days, of course, they've become a family business that deals with all sorts of urban legends and supernatural incidents.

Naturally, the Xuan family has never believed in ghosts and gods.

The Xuan family believes that the only thing in the world with vitality is the spirit, and that all living things are vessels for spirits. A spirit can inhabit anything, living or inanimate. A vessel capable of biological activity can only truly function once a spirit inhabits it, and when a living body dies, its spirit returns to its natural state and waits to enter another suitable vessel.

In that sense, the spirit in a human isn't necessarily stronger than the spirit in a cat. It's just that the human vessel is more advanced and can carry out more intelligent activities. Most spirits therefore naturally seek out more advanced vessels. To prevent spirits from fighting over vessels, the strongest spirit created and maintains a system for assigning them. This system has continued to the present day.

Based on this theory, the Xuan family developed a unique set of techniques to deal with supernatural incidents. They have earned a fine reputation in this field, but the Xuan family itself also has its own peculiarities.
