The Song Kingdom had fallen. Its former ruler knelt and begged for surrender, offering the Ninth Princess to the usurping general.
The Ninth Princess, Mu Wanwan, was exceptionally beautiful, with a delicate and graceful figure, but she suffered from a strange illness.
She was terribly sleepy and could sleep until the sky went dark, at any time of day or night.
The young general who had once been her childhood friend was gone. All that remained was a ruthless, cold-blooded tyrant, and everyone worried about the little princess's future.
Then a miracle happened to Mu Wanwan.
As long as she stayed near the new emperor, she could stay awake a little longer each day.
To sleep fewer hours, Mu Wanwan gazed at him through her misty, teary eyes and edged closer, quietly reminding herself again and again:
“I want crab roe pastries, soup dumplings, clay-pot rice, and crystal cakes. I don't want to fall asleep.”
“The tailor shop in the west of the city has new clothes. I want to try on a few more fashionable outfits.”
“The new musician and swordsman is so handsome. I want to look at him a little longer.”

One midsummer night, with the moon hidden and the wind howling,
the man cornered her beside the bathtub and slowly tugged at her sash. Blood stained half of his handsome profile, and his voice was languid and seductive. “What's the most delicious? What's the most fun? What's the most beautiful?”
Mu Wanwan's will to survive went into overdrive. “You, you, it's all you.”
“Good girl.”
From then on, every day after court, whenever he went to see her, he carried a hammer with him.
He would sit at the entrance to her bedchamber, cracking almonds and walnuts as he waited for her to wake, so he could feed her fresh nuts with his own hands.
The new emperor, Pei Shao, had lived a life of sweeping highs and crushing lows. He had fallen from the clouds into the mire, lost his family, and sunk into despair before rising to the top again.
And throughout it all, the only person who had never abandoned him was the little princess from his childhood, a ray of light in the abyss.
