[Male lead: scheming and aloof x Female lead: the village’s notorious little spitfire] Tang Mengmeng had just bought an entire building and hadn’t even had time to enjoy the pleasure of collecting rent when she stumbled into a period novel set in an era of material scarcity. Her building was gone, her pink Mao-era banknotes were gone, and so was her carefree, happy life. Tang Mengmeng broke down completely. In the original story, she was a negative example for the heroine, and more than once she put her life on the line to help the hero and heroine’s beautiful romance. Not only was she poorly educated, she was also written as a vicious shrew, so whenever trouble came along, all she knew how to do was make a scene. She made the heroine look cultured and beautiful, giving the noble-born hero an excuse to divorce her domineeringly and live happily ever after with the heroine. Tang Mengmeng, after pulling herself together: To hell with being a brainless female side character! I’ve decided to focus on my career! I’ll get back to living the landlady life! So she raised rice-paddy crabs, managed vegetable greenhouses, and built up her little business until it was thriving, all while waiting for the hero to divorce her. Who knew she wouldn’t get her wish, and that he’d even change which university she applied to! She headed north and kicked his door open as soon as they met. “Who changed the university I applied to?” Jiang Chuan had no reason to be right, yet he was full of righteous indignation. “If you went somewhere else, I wouldn’t be able to stop worrying.” Tang Mengmeng: “Speak plainly!” Jiang Chuan: “Mengmeng, I like you.” Tang Mengmeng panicked. Weren’t they supposed to get divorced? Why wasn’t the male lead following the plot anymore? Wasn’t this getting in the way of her career? Content warning: Lots of career development, with romance as a subplot. An alternate-history period setting with plenty of original worldbuilding. If it’s not your thing, don’t read it. If you argue with me, I’ll back down; if I back down, you’re right. Theme: Leading the whole village to prosperity
