Meeting You

Qin Rui was made Princess Chaoyang as a child. Her father was a celebrated general, and she was raised to become the next empress.

Then, when she was eight, she met the Ninth Prince, the Crown Prince's younger brother. She thought the Ninth Prince was much better-looking than the Crown Prince, and, dazzled by his beauty, let him coax her into exchanging tokens of affection. When her mother found out, she nearly beat one of her legs off!

The General's wife scoffed and tossed the jade pendant at He Yan. "Rui'er is still young. Are you telling me the Ninth Prince doesn't know any better?"

The boy lowered his head and eyes, saying nothing.

Eight years later, the emperor, who had long been bedridden, suddenly died. His final decree named the Ninth Prince, born to a lowborn and disfavored mother, as his successor. With imperial guards surrounding the capital inside and out, not a single person in the court objected.

They say the palace walls were stained red with blood that night. Just as the General's household was trembling with anxiety, an imperial decree naming their daughter empress arrived without warning. The General's wife could only nervously send her daughter, who had just come of age, into the palace.

There was a rumor in the palace that every night, the emperor had to coax the empress to sleep before he could go to the imperial study to attend to state affairs.

The people in Jiaofang Hall just smiled without a word. Have you ever heard the emperor tell a bedtime story?

He Yan: This time, he wants both the realm and the little star in his hands.
