Little Spring Sparrow

Shen Que first met Liang Zheng on the roof of a hospital.

It was the day of the Beginning of Winter. She had already put one foot over the edge when someone behind her suddenly called, "Hey."

She turned around, assuming the man was going to talk her out of it, and refused: "Don't try to stop me. I've thought this through."

"Stop you?"

The man smiled. He lit the cigarette between his lips, lazily lifted his chin, then tossed out a line in English: "You jump, I see you jump."

The second time they met, Shen Que was trapped in a filthy alley and being beaten up.

The same familiar "Hey," and once again, he didn't come over.

He merely took out his phone and dialed 110, saying in an obnoxious tone, "Well, look at that, a chance to play the hero and save a beauty. I'll take it."

Later, Liang Zheng often sold paintings outside their school.

His art was soothing and warm, full of hope.

Shen Que thought he would surely become a famous painter one day, provided he could get his illness treated.

Short story, tragic ending, not contracted.
