With a broken eggshell on his head, Jiujiu struggled to open his eyes and look around. Their home was bare, his parents were old, and the family of three survived on nothing but the wind.
Thinking they couldn't go on living like this, Jiujiu set off on his tiny legs, flapping his wings as he went to look for work. On the road, he was picked up by a group of elderly people enjoying a tour of the mountains.
"Let's make chicken soup," said the old man kindly.
Jiujiu: "Cheep? Cheep? Cheep? Cheep? Cheep? Cheep?"
"My grandson needs a companion. Why not become a child bride chicken for our family?" said another old man, stroking his beard as a glint flashed in his eyes.
"Let him choose for himself."
At the crossroads of his bird life, Jiujiu decisively chose to survive.
That night, Jiujiu was dressed up beautifully and put inside a gift box. After staring at a cold, powerful big shot for three seconds, he was grabbed by his tiny claws, held upside down, and flicked into a corner with a single finger.
Jiujiu was so furious he cursed all night.
From then on, Jiujiu made a home in the big shot's pocket. Every day, the man played with him by rubbing him, flicking him, pinching him, stroking him, teasing him, pressing him, and rolling him around, until Jiujiu started molting.
The big shot: "Where'd this feather duster come from?"
Jiujiu was this close to dying, but luckily his father found him after he'd run away from home and brought him back. Only then did he explain everything to Jiujiu.
"We're Vermilion Birds. We don't need to eat. We weren't living on nothing but wind before, either. We were absorbing the essence of the sun and moon. We're this old because it took us a thousand years to hatch you, and it wore us out. We've got money and antiques at home, enough to last for hundreds of years... Also, I hear you've sold yourself to be a child bride chicken?"
Jiujiu closed his eyes and shed tears of sudden wealth and regret. He turned around, left a breakup egg in the nest for the big shot, and happily ran off to his new life!
#So you called me a feather duster#
#Go hatch your own eggs, you lousy man#
#Come on, a whole litter of puppyish heartthrobs#
A guide for new readers:
1. Jiujiu is an adult chicken. No, an adult Vermilion Bird.
2. He lays eggs (fried, stir-fried, boiled, or deep-fried...).
3. I hear the angels who add this to their favorites will soon get rich...
