Xie Chen, the chief disciple of the Xuantian Sect, was reborn.
In his previous life, he died a horrible death on the sacrificial altar. Only after he died did he learn that his taciturn junior disciple, Lin Zhao, had entered the demonic path for his sake and slaughtered the entire cultivation world.
This time, Xie Chen decided to get the jump on things. He would raise Lin Zhao into the most obedient dog imaginable, one who would clear away every obstacle on the road to revenge.
Xie Chen played up his "two-faced innocent" persona to the fullest.
In public, he'd clutch his chest with red-rimmed eyes and take Lin Zhao's punishment in his place. "A-Zhao is still young. If someone has to be punished, punish me."
Then he'd turn around and gently brainwash Lin Zhao. "A-Zhao, you need to grow stronger. Your senior brother is frail, so from now on, I'll be counting on you to protect me."
Caught between sweetness and unease, Lin Zhao was consumed by doubts. My senior brother treats me so well. Does he truly love me, or does he just see me as a loyal dog?
Until the day of the Heaven-Sacrificing Ceremony.
Xie Chen detonated the core of the formation and looked coldly at Lin Zhao. "I never loved you. I protected you just to have fun raising a dog. I'm bored of you now, so I don't want you anymore."
A tremendous storm of energy hurled Lin Zhao away, sending him plunging into a demonic abyss thousands of miles away.
He clawed his way out of a pile of corpses, refusing the demonic elders' offer to make him their king. His mind was filled with the words, "I'm bored of you now."
With resentment burning in his heart, he swore to fight his way back and force his heartless senior brother to look him in the eye and say, "I never loved you," one more time!
But when he finally fought his way back to the sect, he found nothing but silent ruins. The formation had backfired, and not a single person in the entire Xuantian Sect had survived.
Like a madman, Lin Zhao dug through the ruins. At last, in the bamboo cottage where they had once spent every day together, he found a few pages of scraps covered in Xie Chen's haphazard handwriting.
There was no revenge plan, just his senior brother's absentminded, contrary musings:
"The weather has been cold lately. A-Zhao's old injury may flare up again. I need to find some redflame grass for medicine. Remember to keep it from the elders. The sect forbids romance. Must remember, must remember."
"If the plan succeeds, the sect will be destroyed. A-Zhao will survive."
"If there's a next life, I won't cultivate the sword. I'll take him down the mountain and open a baozi shop. He likes meat filling."
Clutching those few thin pages, Lin Zhao wept as if his heart were breaking.
Just then, a faint cough came from deep within the ruins.
The man who should have been utterly annihilated was sitting among the rubble, covered in dust and looking frail, gazing at him helplessly.
"Why are you crying? Didn't your senior brother say I'd protect you for the rest of your life? A-Zhao, come here and let me hold you. Your senior brother loves you."
