The Begonia Blooms as Ever

When Shen Tangxin married, ten miles of bridal finery lined Shun'an Street.

Her husband was the seventh son of Prince Rui, the regent, a true imperial noble. By marrying him, she went from being a merchant's daughter to a noblewoman.

Her husband was taciturn and not especially considerate.

Still, Shen Tangxin was content. She had once dreamed of spending her whole life with just one person, and had even defied her parents and clan for it. But reality had dealt her a harsh blow, leaving her to die young and her children at the mercy of others. In this life, she would follow the rules, support her husband and raise her children, and be a proper, virtuous wife.

After they married, the couple treated each other with respect and courtesy. They soon had their first child, then their second. Her husband had no other women by his side, and they became the model couple in everyone's eyes.

That night, she smiled as she told her personal maid all this, only for her husband to overhear every word.

Shen Tangxin went along with it. "Don't you think that's funny?"

Her husband, expressionless: "Let's get some rest."

Shen Tangxin never defied him, so she blew out the lamp and climbed into bed.

In the darkness, the man came over her as he always did.

...Her usually restrained husband was unusually rough this time. When they were done, Shen Tangxin was drifting off to sleep as she murmured, "I don't think it's funny at all."
