In the seventh year of Kangwu, young Xiao Xueluo went with her mother to worship at a mountain temple and ran into bandits. A graceful young man, as pure as jade and wearing a veiled hat, appeared just in time to save her.
At the poetry gathering in the twelfth year of Kangwu, the Crown Prince of the Eastern Palace, Mo Ziyan, turned back amid the flowers, bright and carefree. The pendant jingling at his waist was the very same one the young man had worn five years earlier.
Despite everyone’s objections, Xiao Xueluo begged the emperor to grant her a marriage, prepared a bridal procession stretching ten miles, and happily married Mo Ziyan in phoenix crown and crimson robes.
On their wedding night, Xiao Xueluo sat alone until dawn. All she received in return was a single sentence: “I already have someone in my heart.”
Feeling indebted to him, Xiao Xueluo took the initiative to bring the woman he loved into the Crown Prince’s household in their very first month of marriage, then withdrew to her own courtyard, neither competing nor making demands.
Only after the entire Xiao clan helped the Crown Prince ascend the throne, only to be condemned to execution, did Xiao Xueluo finally learn the truth as she lay gravely ill and near death:
She had fallen into a trap carefully laid by Mo Ziyan. The one who had truly saved her was the Third Prince, Mo Jingli, whom Mo Ziyan had sent far away to the border.
Xiao Xueluo used her last breath to hold on until Mo Jingli led his troops in rebellion and stormed the palace.
As she lay dying, the bloodthirsty Asura drew her into his arms, stroking her cloudlike hair as he said again and again, “Xiao Xueluo, from the highest heavens to the depths of the underworld, you will never escape me.”
After a dreamlike lifetime, Xiao Xueluo was reborn in the seventh year of Kangwu.
Mo Jingli was still a young man. He gripped Xiao Xueluo’s arm tightly, the corners of his eyes bloodshot, and rasped, “I finally found you.”
