A Peaceful Sleep at One Hundred

[I love Mayuri Kurotsuchi so much. I wrote this on a whim, so the timeline and plot may differ from canon.]

No fighting. Proceed with caution. That was the Twelfth Division captain's rule for his daughter.

To become a true Soul Reaper meant making sacrifices. To fight meant risking your life. The moment anyone in the Soul Society came into being, they had already bound their honor, shame, and life to their loyalty to the Seireitei.

He would not let that illusory sense of honor cost Nemu her life. In life, he had lost his family. After becoming a Soul Reaper, he had lost his fiancee. If anyone dared to hurt Nemu, he would make them taste the despair he had endured.

After the Thousand-Year Blood War, he made a child's body for Nemu. Watching her grow and learn day by day let him experience the joy of being a father once more. But a letter from Kisuke Urahara shattered the peace. It read:

To the Captain of the Twelfth Division,

My little shop is on the verge of bankruptcy due to poor management. I hope you, as head of the Research and Development Institute, can provide a little financial support. Please bring some money to the shop on a certain date, and two lovely young ladies will lead you to an old acquaintance.

Mayuri wasn't sure which of his old acquaintances had yet to become a test subject. But Urahara had brought up a piece of history he would rather not remember.

"Miss Linxi is still alive. You're the only one who can bring her back," Urahara paused. "After all, you are her fiance."

Theme: A century after parting, Mayuri Kurotsuchi and Narcissus meet again.
