An Outsider's Journey Toward Death

Also known as: A Thousand and One Ways to Die Together

Also known as: Can Two People Who Want to Die Really Fall in Love?

Inohara didn't know why she couldn't die. She only remembered having lived for a very, very long time. People came and went around her, and sometimes those she knew would cross over to the other side after only a few years. She gradually got used to living somewhere for a few years and then moving away. After all, with her appearance frozen at seventeen or eighteen, she never fit in.

Over time, she gradually discovered why she had become this way. In the legends stretching from the Heian-kyo period to the present, there was one god whose condition matched hers: Yao Bikuni, who had eaten mermaid flesh.

Inohara didn't care whether she was alive or dead. But she had always been alone in this world, wandering by herself. The emptiness wasn't just around her; it was inside her too. The loneliness was unbearable. Nobody could understand her, and the pain made her wish she could die right away.

Until she saw Dazai Osamu and realized she wasn't the only lonely person in the world.
