After Working for Black Impermanence

Xie Qi, a poor orphan girl from Shuanggang County, lived a carefree life at her uncle's home thanks to her "cleverness and resourcefulness."

One day, she woke up in a dilapidated haunted house, with two corpses lying beside her, both dead in horrific ways.

Terrified and still trying to get her bearings, she was arrested by constables who burst through the door and thrown into jail.

Xie Qi clung to the bars and shouted, "I'm innocent! Oh, wise and just lord!"

In an instant, the heavens and earth changed color, and the constables collapsed in a heap.

A man in black emerged from the darkness. Wearing a tall hat and a pale face, he grinned at her:

"I hear you want justice?"

Xie Qi stared at the four words, "Peace Under Heaven," on his hat and shook her head repeatedly.

"No, I don't. I'm not wronged. I belong in jail!"

Fan Wujiao, the Black Impermanence, smiled again, swishing the soul-catching rope in his hand as he asked softly:

"I hear you want justice?"

With tears in her eyes, Xie Qi nodded, full of tragic resolve. "Yes, that's right. I want justice..."

Waaah! Usually I only run into low-level ghosts. This time it's a big shot. What do I do?

Before she had even warmed the jail cell, the Black Impermanence hauled Xie Qi out. Looking at his somewhat frightening getup, she asked in a trembling voice:

"Lord Impermanence, what are you going to do?"

Fan Wujiao smiled warmly. "Work as an Impermanence for three years and you'll get a thousand taels of gold and a fine husband. Are you in?"

Xie Qi wanted to shake her head, but didn't dare, so she gritted her teeth and nodded. "I'm in!"
