Jiang Yan is one of Madam Gan’s most capable hands at Songzhu House. Each day, he mainly settles the squabbles among the little rabbits. The rabbits all try to befriend him, hoping to improve their standing at Songzhu House.
One day, a new rabbit arrives at the house. He’s not to be messed with, and he hits anyone he sees.
Madam Gan has no choice but to send Jiang Yan, who has the best people skills, to look after him.
On the first day, Jiang Yan gets drenched.
On the second day, Jiang Yan drugs the new rabbit and knocks him out.
On the third day, the new rabbit frames Jiang Yan and docks his monthly pay.
On the fourth day, Jiang Yan sows discord among the rabbits and successfully ostracizes the newcomer.
Eventually, the new rabbit accepts his fate and quietly starts learning the lessons expected of a rabbit. Jiang Yan hasn’t even finished letting out a sigh of relief when he’s summoned to the newcomer’s room that evening.
Beneath the dim lamplight, his androgynous beauty is bewitching. He picks up the bamboo flute from the table and gently lifts Jiang Yan’s chin with it. His breath is fragrant as he teases, “Yan’er, why are you so late? Your darling has been waiting impatiently.”
Jiang Yan stares, dumbfounded.
The new rabbit abruptly drops his alluring act and smiles provocatively. “Jiang Yan, how did I do?”
Jiang Yan replies coldly, “Pretty good. I’ll tell Madam tomorrow that you’re ready to be put on the roster.” He strokes the newcomer’s fair, tender cheek and sneers, “Serve your customers well. Understand?”
Note: Rabbits are male courtesans, but they sell their art, not their bodies.
