After losing her parents as a child, Qu Yu was taken in and raised by Madam Lin herself. From a young age, she knew that Lin Zhi Xu, the Lin family's eldest legitimate son, was her betrothed.
But Lin Zhi Xu spent most of his time away from home studying and traveling, so the two were not close.
One year, Lin Zhi Xu suddenly returned. Qu Yu was out in the mountains with someone at the time, and her betrothed went into the mountains to find her. On their way down, a boulder struck the Lin family's carriage, knocking Lin Zhi Xu unconscious.
That night, the Lin residence was in an uproar. Feeling responsible for the accident, Qu Yu volunteered to care for him herself. Lin Zhi Xu woke up the next day, but he had lost his memory.
Looking at the refined young man rubbing his forehead on the bed, Qu Yu had the audacity to come up with an idea. If Lin Zhi Xu liked her, then even if the Lin family blamed her for what happened, surely he would protect her.
Nervously licking her lips, she gritted her teeth and tugged at his sleeve, saying softly, "You're finally awake. I was so worried about you."
Lin Zhi Xu turned his head and asked hesitantly, "May I ask who you are?"
Qu Yu burst into tears. "I'm your wife-to-be. We've been close since childhood. As soon as you returned from your studies, you went looking for me, but fate had other plans. You were struck by a boulder while protecting me, and that's how you lost your memory."
Lin Zhi Xu stared at her for a long while, then said doubtfully, "I don't remember you at all."
"Of course you don't remember me. You've lost your memory." Afraid he wouldn't believe her, Qu Yu pointed to the jade hairpin she had just bought and was wearing. "You carved this hairpin for me yourself. Why would I lie to you?"
Perhaps her expression was so sincere that Lin Zhi Xu nodded, seeming to believe her.
Qu Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
But it didn't last. Lin Zhi Xu seemed to take their supposedly close relationship to heart. He clung to her every day and even had her move into the courtyard next to his.
Half a year later, Qu Yu accompanied him up the mountain to pray for blessings. Unfortunately, boulders came tumbling down, and both of them were hit.
Lin Zhi Xu, whose memory had returned, smiled at Qu Yu, who had now lost hers.
"You're finally awake. I was so worried about you."
Qu Yu shrank back and asked quietly, "Who are you?"
Lin Zhi Xu twirled a lock of her hair. His pale eyes brimmed with amusement as he spoke unhurriedly. "I'm your husband-to-be. We've been deeply in love since childhood, but fate had other plans..."
Qu Yu looked at the handsome man before her, then wiggled her fingers and asked hesitantly, "Why don't I remember you?"
Lin Zhi Xu's smile faded, and his gaze darkened. "You lost your memory, so of course you don't remember. You have a white jade hairpin, don't you? I carved it myself."
Qu Yu scratched her head. "I think I bought that..."
The man's expression grew darker and darker, so Qu Yu wisely shut her mouth.
After a long while, Lin Zhi Xu's expression returned to normal. "Call me husband. I want to hear it."
Qu Yu asked incredulously, "But I'm not married to you yet, am I?"
Lin Zhi Xu chuckled and drawled, "That's because you cling to me every day. Look, you even insisted on moving your courtyard next to mine. I told you so many times, but you wouldn't listen." He sighed as if helpless.
"Why haven't you called me that yet?"
"Hu... husband?"

Sheng Zhao, the second young master of the Sheng family, is a terrible person: reckless and lazy, he constantly throws the Imperial College into chaos. He's exactly the kind of person Jiang Yu hates most.
Except for his face.
At the Lantern Festival banquet, the newly appointed top scholar insulted the Sheng family with his arrogant words. Sheng Zhao didn't hold back for a second. He dragged the man out and beat him up.
The imperial guards hauled him into the hall. Even kneeling before the throne, the young man showed no remorse. With a lazy grin, he mocked the top scholar as too weak to lift a chicken and unfit for any important role.
His father, furious, lashed him with a whip. A bloody welt immediately opened, leaving a glaring mark on the pale blue uniform of an Imperial College student.
The young man gritted his teeth and took it without making a sound. Jiang Yu watched his thin back straighten, youthful yet resilient.
Before she understood her own feelings, Jiang Yu had already stood up to defend him.
Half of the young man's face was in shadow. A hint of disbelief flashed through his eyes.
After the banquet, Sheng Zhao came to thank her, still injured. He spoke with his usual insouciant, lazy air.
Just the way Jiang Yu disliked.
After that incident, rumors of an affair between them inexplicably began to spread around the academy. They grew wilder and wilder until they reached Jiang Yu's mother.
The princess consort chose her words carefully. "Yu'er, have you made a close friend lately?"
Jiang Yu shook her head. "No."
The princess consort breathed a sigh of relief and was just about to send her back to her studies when a strange noise came from beyond the wall.
"Jiang Yu! Want to go horse racing?"
Sheng Zhao had one foot on a tree branch and was sitting atop the wall of the prince's residence, calling out to her. Even after seeing the princess consort, he didn't look flustered. He nimbly jumped down, the corners of his eyes lifting as he smiled and bowed.
The princess consort rarely lost her composure, but now she did. "Yu'er, didn't you say... there was no one?"
Sheng Zhao's eyes sparkled, his brows relaxed as he asked with interest, "No one what?"
Charming schemer x deceptively unflappable
