Ivory Tower

In the end, the boy stayed in the ivory tower.

Twenty-year-old Qin Shuo remembers nineteen-year-old Gu Nan.

That spirited yet lifeless Gu Nan liked cherry cola and cake. On the last page of his textbook, there was a cute little figure he had drawn.

Sixty-nine-year-old Qin Shuo does not remember the name of the person he knew at nineteen.

A name rolls around in his throat, again and again, but in the end it fades away beneath the afternoon trees. Qin Shuo sits in a rocking chair with his grandson in his arms. The chair rocks slowly, and his grandson babbles. Qin Shuo looks up, always feeling there is something he has forgotten.

Like a kiss that was never given.
