He saves her

1.

Before Chen Ji transferred in, his friends repeatedly warned Sheng Chu not to mess with him.

He was a born prodigy, always skipping class, smoking, and fighting. Thanks to his good looks, countless girls had confessed to him, but he had never so much as glanced at any of them.

Sheng Chu shrugged, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.

Her family had suffered a sudden upheaval when she was in middle school, and she had developed stress-induced mutism. She couldn't speak to anyone outside her family.

Chen Ji wouldn't be interested in her.

On the day scholarship recipients were announced, Chen Ji didn't come to school. At her teacher's request, Sheng Chu went to his home to have him fill out the form.

As she passed the mouth of an alley, she heard a familiar voice.

Chen Ji had a boy by the neck and pinned him to the ground. His voice was icy. “You were the one who started spreading rumors about Sheng Chu, right? Tomorrow, bring a written apology and apologize to her and the teacher.”

He looked up and caught sight of Sheng Chu at the mouth of the alley. His expression tensed for an instant, then quickly returned to normal. He sauntered over. “What are you looking at? I was sticking up for you.”

Sheng Chu was silent for two seconds, then mouthed: Thank you.

“That's it?” Chen Ji was so speechless he started laughing. He reached out to ruffle her hair and leaned close to her ear. “If you really want to thank me, give me a kiss.”

“...”

When she refused, he settled for the next best thing. “Then say something to me. Repeat after me: I like Chen Ji...”

Sheng Chu cut him off expressionlessly. “You'd be better off dreaming.”

“...”

After a long pause, Chen Ji lowered his eyes and smiled. “Hey, your ears are red.”

Reader's Guide:

A high school campus romance. No one is perfect, and both leads have flaws.

The heroine has mutism and can't speak at first, but she gets better later. The blurb is set later in the story.

“As long as it's you, I'll love you with all my heart.”
