Tiandou is four and a half years old, a poor little thing. Before she was even born, her handsome father disappeared.
Her grandparents called her a jinx. At the urging of her uncles, they seized her family's spacious house and drove them into a dilapidated thatched hut.
The village children said Tiandou's older brother was an idiot who couldn't cry or smile and flew into violent rages at the slightest thing.
Furious, little Tiandou, who still stuttered a bit, got into a fight with them. They beat her until her face was twice its usual size, but she proudly shouted, "My big brother is the best big brother in the whole world!"
Her beautiful mother worked from dawn until late at night to make ends meet, until at last she fell ill from exhaustion.
Tiandou sat on the doorstep and cried and cried. Suddenly, a golden light flashed from the doghouse and sucked her inside.
It turned out her family's doghouse was a magical place connected to the Dragon Palace.

When the mermaid auntie heard her sad story, she shed a string of pearls and said, "These are worth a fortune in the human world. Your family will surely become the richest in the village."
Before Tiandou could even sell them, the home of the chubby boy who'd bullied her was raided. Several chests of jewels were found inside. His family had exploited the common people, so they were going to be locked up.
Tiandou was stunned. Those pearls weren't even as big as the ones in her hand, and they were going to get thrown in jail?
Boo-hoo-hoo, she'd better hide all of them in the wardrobe.
Uncle Turtle took out a shell he'd shed hundreds of years ago and said that if her mother drank it in warm water, she'd be full of energy the next day and live as long as he did.
But her most annoying cousin snatched it away and made soup with it. Even worse, he bragged to Tiandou that it tasted delicious.
That night, the whole family ran to the outhouse and had diarrhea for three days and three nights. When they finally came out, they smelled like poop and their cheeks had sunk in.

Tiandou also made friends with Aotian, the young crown prince of Grandpa Dragon King. He was extravagantly spoiled: he drank only the finest spirit spring water from the West Sea's source, and ate only seaweed from the deepest part of the East Sea.
If even the smallest thing displeased him, he'd throw down his spoon, cry and scream, and throw a tantrum on the floor.
Not long afterward, Tiandou discovered that the young prince, who used to think he ruled the world, had become the child of the poorest family in the village. He was fighting with six siblings over a bowl of salted vegetable soup, with not a drop of oil in it, yet he looked perfectly content and said he'd never tasted such delicious soup...
