I Called the Matchmaker

Ever since the new era raised the banner of free love, matchmakers of all sizes have been facing the threat of unemployment.

Nie Qiushui's family has been a clan of matchmakers for generations. She is the only one left who truly carries on the family tradition; everyone else has found other work to make a living. She spends every day diligently running her matchmaking agency while still living off her family, and it looks like the business is about to close. At last, a call comes in, and Nie Qiushui answers right away.

"Hello! Are you looking for a match? Our One Thread Matchmaking Agency has the most comprehensive database of singles in the country. Just tell us what you're looking for, and we'll find it for you. We're even expanding overseas."

There is a long silence on the other end of the line, then a magnetic voice says,

"Jiang Zhengyuan's destined match is someone named Chen Qiaoqiao."

The call ends.

Nie Qiushui is baffled, but the name sounds familiar. She quickly searches her matchmaking records. Chen Qiaoqiao was a client from a long time ago, but there has been no word from her since her first visit.

Curious and pushed into a corner by her circumstances, Nie Qiushui decides to try what the caller suggested. To her delight, it works!

After that, calls like this come in every so often, telling her which people to bring together. Every match ends happily, and her One Thread Matchmaking Agency quickly becomes famous. Nie Qiushui couldn't be happier.

Until one day, an exceptionally handsome man walks into the agency. Nie Qiushui stands to greet him.

"Sir, what can I do for you?"

The man looks around as casually as if he were in his own living room. Then his gaze settles on Nie Qiushui, and he says,

"I'm here to invest in my matchmaking branch in the mortal realm."

Ever since the mortal realm embraced free love, ill-fated and destined relationships have become hopelessly intertwined. The Matchmaker God's ledger is a complete mess, and the flowers on the Tree of Marriage bloom and wither over and over. The Red Thread score is at rock bottom, so the former Matchmaker God rage-quits on the spot, leaving the new Matchmaker God, Ji Sizhou, to clean up the mess.

After spending an entire month sorting through destined matches, he carefully chooses a matchmaking shop in the mortal realm to give special attention to. Thankfully, the young woman down there is doing a fine job. Watching the Red Thread score climb steadily, Ji Sizhou nods in satisfaction and decides to go down and reward his hardworking employee in person.
