The New Emperor and His Former Consort

Jing Wan entered the palace at sixteen, but she was never particularly favored.

As new faces replaced the old in the palace, Consort Ning, dying young of an illness, used her final breath to ask Jing Wan to look after the tenth prince.

The tenth prince was only seven. His silent eyes looked at her, their depths marked by tears of grief over his mother's death.

Jing Wan pitied him and treated him as her own.

--

The tenth prince grew older each day, becoming a handsome young man with a deep, serious nature.

Jing Wan had by then grown into an aging consort. Reclining against a couch, she flipped through portraits one by one. "The general's daughter is quite pretty. Want to take a look?"

Hong Yan lowered his lashes, concealing some of his thoughts.

Later, the tenth prince ascended the throne and unified the Northern Dynasty.

The ministers all said the new emperor governed diligently, restrained himself, observed the rites, and followed the law. He was so perfect that they couldn't find a single fault with him.

Only Jing Wan knew how burning and wild the new emperor's gaze toward her really was.
