The great general, just returned from an expedition, sat upright beside a round table, idly turning a teacup in his hand. He slowly raised his head, revealing a frightening scar across his handsome face.

This was a royal villa. Pei Zhumei leaned against the door, biting her lower lip. News of the fighting on the frontier had yet to reach the capital, but it was already the great general's third day back in the city, and nobody knew.

A month ago, the Pei family received an imperial edict: His Majesty had appointed Pei Zhumei empress, and their wedding was set for the middle of the fifth month. The news had already spread.

She watched the great general approach, then turned her head away and let him scoop her up in his arms and carry her into the inner room.

At the banquet that evening, she wore splendid robes as the eldest daughter of the Duke of Zhenguo and attended His Majesty. While stealing a moment to massage her legs, she saw someone rush in to report the great general's victory on the frontier.

His Majesty was overjoyed and immediately ordered rewards for the entire army. He dispatched an envoy to the frontier to escort the great general back to the capital.

This battle is hard to win. Either I die, or I make it back alive.

I won. Reward me.

One man and one woman, both each other's first and only; childhood sweethearts with an age gap of a few years; no blood relation; stealing someone's wife; outrageously melodramatic. The title and blurb may be revised after posting.
