[Investiture of the Gods] Slaying the Gods

Reader's guide: Set in the world of the Na Er Na Qian version of "Creation of the Gods." Not for readers who demand historical accuracy.

Deng Chanyu, daughter of the Deng clan's Jiu Gong, was renowned from childhood for her martial prowess. Jiu Gong served the Shang dynasty for forty years before dying in the campaign against the North Sea. Grief-stricken, Chanyu resolved to follow in her father's footsteps and serve the Shang loyally.

At that time, Heaven sent calamities and disasters upon the people. The Investiture of the Gods appeared, Xiqi rebelled, and the Shang dynasty was in peril. The king bestowed armor upon her and ordered her to lead an army against the Western Ji.

Fortunately, the clan had a girl named Xing Ling, a beastly spirit from the beastfolk, bound to Chanyu by a pact that could only be broken by death.

Xing Ling often said, “Fortune and prosperity lie in your own hands, not in Heaven's.”

Xing Ling's greatest wish in this life was to be free of her beastly form.

As she watched that little girl grow, step by step, into a general who stood above all others, proudly setting out on a campaign, Xing Ling suddenly changed her mind.

She asked, “Chanyu, do you want to become a god?”

Deng Chanyu shot her a disdainful glance. “What's so good about gods? If praying to them really worked, why would there still be so many starving, poor, and suffering people in the world?”

**

Xing Ling didn't understand the human world, but she seemed to understand Deng Chanyu's heart.
