Synopsis:
I went to visit one of my students at home. When a woman came out of the bedroom, I froze on the spot.
Her face quietly overlapped with the features of someone buried deep in my memories.
But she smiled distantly. “Teacher, you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”
I almost believed her, until I saw that familiar name and address in my student’s household register.
She reluctantly admitted who she was, but treated me with the politeness reserved for a stranger.
I asked her out to dinner. She said she wasn’t feeling well and turned me down.
Then, on Friday night, I ran into her at a lesbian bar. She was drinking, pressed close to someone, smiling brightly enough to sting. She didn’t look unwell at all.
We had a vicious argument.
I scolded her for throwing her life away. She laughed at how uptight I was. “If you can’t stand me, why do you keep coming back?”
We parted on bad terms.
But when her younger sister tearfully told me, “My sister has a fever, and there’s no one to look after her,” I went anyway.
The little princess who once lived in a mansion was now crammed into a run-down apartment.
Only when I saw a thick stack of medical records beside her bed did I understand where all those thorns had come from.
My heart softened, and I let the past go.
Fine. I’d just take in a stray puppy.
Somewhere along the way, she began quietly working her way into my life, little by little.
Under the pretext of thanking me, she made me one delicious meal after another.
She held my hand tightly as we swayed at a concert, then turned to smile at me without reserve amid the roaring crowd.
Beneath a dazzling fireworks display, she gazed at me. The night sky shimmered with color, but her eyes were so focused that it seemed I was the only one reflected in them.
She said, “Funian, you’ll always be my best friend.”
As she spoke, her fingertips gently wound around a strand of my hair, her breath warm by my ear.
Best friends?
Is that what friends do?
I suddenly wanted to know:
Just where did she think the definition of “best friend” ended?

Coming soon: I Won’t Get Back Together with Her! Here’s the synopsis. Please add it to your reading list!
[Rekindled romance + dating show livestream + slight futuristic full-dive tech]
Three years ago, while madly in love, Jiang Youyou wrote a post titled “Places I’ll Visit with Her in the Future.”
The post went viral thanks to the stunning looks of both her and her girlfriend, Su Sheng, then sank into obscurity after they broke up without a word.
Three years later, the post suddenly updated.
One “check-in photo” after another appeared, showing Jiang Youyou and Su Sheng standing side by side at all the places they’d once planned to visit.
Jiang Youyou’s hair stood on end. She hadn’t updated the post, and she hadn’t visited any of those places with Su Sheng.
*
Jiang Youyou’s first thought was that her ex, Su Sheng, was behind it.
Now that full-dive technology was commonplace, faking a video was a piece of cake. A few photos would be even easier.
She went straight to Su Sheng’s door, ready to let her have it the moment she confessed.
Jiang Youyou waited in the underground parking garage and blocked the person getting out of her car.
Three years had passed, and her ex-wife had become a rising star in the tech world.
Su Sheng wore a black suit, her long hair falling in loose curls. Her gaze was as cold as if she were looking at a stranger.
“Even if I had doctored the photos, would I have your forum account password?” Su Sheng asked flatly. “Besides, Jiang Youyou, do you really think my time and energy are that worthless?”
Jiang Youyou stormed off.
*
The bizarre resurgence of the post caught the attention of The Heartbeat Pact, a couples’ livestreaming reality show, which invited Jiang Youyou to join.
Of course she turned them down. Who wanted to see her ex-wife’s deadpan face again?
But the very next second, an anonymous message came in.
“Want to know who’s updating the post? Then accept the invitation.”
At the same time, a staff member from The Heartbeat Pact told her, “Here’s some good news: CEO Su Sheng has already accepted our invitation!”
Jiang Youyou: “…”
*
They reunited on the livestream.
The host asked, “After all this time, what’s your latest impression of each other?”
Su Sheng replied without expression, “Unambitious, childish, a pretty face with nothing behind it.”
Jiang Youyou fired back, “Arrogant, self-important, and so sharp-tongued you’d poison yourself if you licked your own mouth.”
The livestream went quiet for a few seconds. Then… the comments exploded.
#They look like they’re getting back together, but also like they’re about to kill each other#
#Some love only becomes deafening after the breakup#
#Hate lasts longer than love. Check-in complete#
*
● Rekindled romance. Sunny, straightforward girl × cold ice queen (who just won’t admit it).
● Su Sheng may seem cold, but she’s completely in love, hopelessly so.
● Su Sheng really isn’t the one updating the post. To find out who is, add this to your reading list and check back when it updates.
