--Story Synopsis--
[First-person perspective]
On her eighteenth birthday, Yan Junru ran away from home, broke with her wealthy father, and went into hiding, working her way through school with the determination to make her mark on the world.
On her twenty-eighth birthday, Yan Junru returned home with an impressive academic record. Fair, beautiful, clever, and still her father's favorite, she had only one regret: she had never been in a relationship.
Her father grew so worried that his hair turned white. He gave her two older brothers a strict order:
"Cast a wide net and catch plenty of fish. If that doesn't work, hold a tournament to find her a husband!"
Her brothers eagerly took up the task and started making arrangements. Yan Junru herself acted as if it had nothing to do with her, even declaring righteously:
"Isn't building a career more fulfilling? Why date?"
Then one day, Yan Junru found a talking rag doll cat outside her door. Thinking she was dreaming, she tossed it back outside.
From that day on, an incorporeal being stayed by Yan Junru's side. It was a real nuisance, but at least she gained a cheat ability that could kill gods and Buddhas who stood in her way. Out of kindness, she even gave the poor nameless creature a name: Ting Ai.
Ting Ai would sometimes appear, and Yan Junru's father and brothers kept catching them together. After learning the truth, her father and brothers were both delighted and worried: "So you just don't like humans, then?"
[Third-person perspective]
In the year 138 of the Star Calendar, the Federation abolished the death penalty and began punishing interstellar criminals by dimensional reduction.
*Dimensional reduction punishment erased a criminal's memories and sent them into a lower-dimensional universe. The entire process, from their birth to their death, was broadcast live. At key moments, public votes determined the criminal's life. This both ensured their punishment and served as a warning to the public, strengthening the Federation's rule.*
Since this punishment was introduced, the Federation's crime rate had fallen year after year. The land was at peace, and life was prosperous.
In the year 140 of the Star Calendar, two years after dimensional reduction punishment was introduced, the Federation's crime rate hit another record low, with new cases totaling just 3 per thousand. The Federation's Supreme Leader issued an amnesty, announcing the pardon of a group of interstellar criminals in a show of benevolence.
Criminal No. 79816, Yan Junru, was on the list.
[Mixed perspectives]
Yan Junru was forcibly recalled to the interstellar world by the amnesty. When she learned that the first half of her life, which she had worked so hard to build, had been nothing more than an entertainment show to other people, she flew into a rage and decided to join forces with Ting Ai to do something big, like replace the Federation's leader.
Just as success seemed within reach, Yan Junru unexpectedly discovered that the leader she had been trying to take down was far away and yet right beside her...
