[First-person POV]

On her eighteenth birthday, Yan Junru runs away from home and cuts ties with her wealthy father. She changes her name, works while studying, and is determined to make her way in the world.

On her twenty-eighth birthday, Yan Junru returns after completing her studies. Her resume is dazzling, and she's fair-skinned, beautiful, clever, and still her father's beloved darling.

The only thing missing from her life is a romantic relationship. She's never dated.

Yan's father is so worried his hair turns white. He gives his two biological sons a strict order:

"Cast a wide net and catch plenty of fish. If all else fails, hold a martial arts tournament to find her a husband!"

Her brothers eagerly get to work. Yan Junru, meanwhile, acts as if it has nothing to do with her, even going so far as to declare:

"Isn't building a career much better? Why date?"

Then one day, Yan Junru finds a talking plush cat outside her room. Thinking she's dreaming, she tosses it out the door.

From that day on, she has an extra companion: a being of pure consciousness. It's certainly annoying, but at least she has gained an all-powerful cheat ability that can slay gods and Buddhas alike. And, out of kindness, she gives the poor nameless thing a name: Ting Ai.

Ting Ai occasionally appears, and her father and brothers keep catching them together. Once they learn the truth, Yan's father and both brothers are equal parts delighted and worried. "So you just don't like humans?"

[Third-person POV]

In Star Calendar Year 138, the Federation abolishes the death penalty, opting instead to punish interstellar criminals by dimensional reduction.

*Dimensional punishment erases the criminals' memories and sends them into a lower-dimensional universe. The entire process, from birth to death, is livestreamed to the public, who vote on the criminals' lives at key turning points. The goals are to effectively punish criminals, warn the public, and strengthen the Federation's rule.

Since dimensional punishment was introduced, the Federation's crime rate has fallen year after year. The land is peaceful and the people are prosperous, with music and dancing everywhere.

In Star Calendar Year 140, two years after the dimensional punishment system was introduced, the Federation's crime rate reaches a new low, with just 3 per thousand new cases. The Federation's supreme leader issues an amnesty, pardoning a group of interstellar criminals as an act of mercy.

Criminal No. 79816, Yan Junru, is on the list.

[Mixed POV]

Yan Junru is forcibly recalled to the stars by the amnesty. When she learns that the first half of her life, which she worked so hard to build, was nothing but a reality show for everyone else, she flies into a rage and decides to pull off something huge with Ting Ai: for example, replace the Federation's leader.

Just as she's on the brink of success, Yan Junru discovers that the leader she's been trying to take down is both far away and right in front of her...
