Why Is the Regent Like That?

When she was a young girl, Meng Cancan had a lover named Xie Sui.

He was the late emperor’s youngest son, a young general with illustrious military achievements and a mind full of grand strategies.

They say that when he returned to the capital after a campaign, his dashing figure atop a tall horse captivated every young woman in the city.

Yet on that day, rain poured down in torrents, and Xie Sui knelt outside the back door of the Meng residence, begging the woman he loved to change her mind.

Meng Cancan did not turn around. Her voice sounded especially resolute amid the rain: "Xie Sui, go back. I don’t want to be a princess consort, and I don’t want to be a general’s wife."

"If I’m going to be anything, I’m going to be empress."

Seven years later, Emperor Qi passed away. The crown prince was still young, so Prince Qi, Xie Sui, would serve as regent.

The spirited young man of the past had become a regent with power over all. Meng Cancan, who had once trampled on his dignity, would now be sent to a temple with the late emperor’s other consorts to have her hair cut and devote herself to religious cultivation.

So many years had passed.

Once again, rain poured down in torrents.

Before the towering Han Palace, Xie Sui asked her casually, "Meng Cancan, do you still want to be empress?"
